This guide to O-Level subjects in Pakistan aims to help making decision to achieve long term goals that a student will make. At fourteen or fifteen, you’re being asked to map out a path that shapes university admissions, career possibilities, and intellectual growth for years ahead. Yet most families navigate this without a clear guide.
Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) (1) has a strong presence in Pakistan’s private school sector. Every year, tens of thousands of students in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi sit these exams — one of the most widely recognised secondary qualifications in the country.
What is O Level Certification and Why shall it be Done?
O Level is a globally recognised secondary qualifications, typically studied from Grade 9 to Grade 10 between the ages of 15 and 17. Distinguished Universities in Pakistan and worldwide — including LUMS, Aga Khan University, and IBA Karachi include these certifications in their admission criteria.
It is not only for an admission in university, but O Levels develops critical thinking and structured academic discipline that is used to prepare students for A Levels, undergraduate study, and professional life. It also helps students to develop a deeper know how that will help them to get enrolment in international universities.
Subject Overview
Cambridge is offering over fifty subjects globally whereas Pakistani schools typically offer a structured set across these groups forming the O-Level subject list Pakistan recognised by Cambridge:

Small-scale schools in smaller metropolitan areas offer eight to ten subjects; high tier schools may offer more than 15. We shall always confirm the subjects being offered before finalising an institute.
Compulsory Subjects
These five subjects are compulsory for getting IBCC equivalence certificate in Pakistan:
- English Language— essential for further study and professional life
- Mathematics — compulsory in almost every combination
- Pakistan Studies — often a regulatory requirement
- Islamic Studies — compulsory for Muslim students at most institutions
- Urdu as a Second Language — satisfies national language requirements
Other than these 5, Students may choose three to five additional subjects based on their personal interest, ability, and career goals.
Science Stream
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology remain core among Cambridge O-Level subjects. The science stream is the most popular for students aiming at medicine, engineering, or natural sciences.
Physics comprises mechanics, waves, electricity, and modern physics. It’s the helpful to build a good foundation for engineering and physical science programmes.
Chemistry embraces at atomic structure, organic chemistry, and laboratory methods — essential for medicine, pharmacy, and chemical engineering.
Biology focuses on cell biology genetics, and human physiology. This is a must for students heading toward medicine, dentistry, or life sciences.
Additional Mathematics is an optional choice, but it is strongly recommended. A total of eight subjects to meet the needs of IBCC in Pakistan.
Commerce and Humanities Stream
This stream has been soaring in popularity over the last decade. As we will need more entrepreneur in the next 10 years, for students seeking the best O-Level subjects commerce is a good choice.
Accounting: It provides the basics of financial statements, bookkeeping, and cost accounting — it shall lead to a direct route into business, chartered accountancy, and finance.
Economics: It comprises of micro and macroeconomics dealing with World Economy, students find it relevant to the real world.
Business Studies: It helps in developing a managerial perspective on marketing, human resources, and finance.
History and Geography: It may develop analytical writing and source evaluation skills — invaluable for students considering law or social sciences.
Computer Science
In Pakistan the tech sector is growing at an extraordinary pace, subjects like Computer Science and ICT among Cambridge O-Level subjects are drawing – unusual focus or curiosity for students. Computer Science, offering Python programming, algorithms, and networks, helps those eager to master the foundations of modern computing. ICT, on the other side, provides a more practical route, emphasising hardware, digital systems, and communication technologies.
How to Choose the Right Combination?
There’s no formula for making the right choice, but the shared principles may help:
Work backwards from A Levels: First be sure of your career choices for A level than go backwards to O Level.
Don’t over-specialise initially: Please go for a balance while making subject selection as studying only sciences or only humanities can close doors of future career choices.
Be clear of your strengths and weaknesses: If your mathematical reasoning is weak, avoid choosing Physics just because either it sounds intellectual or being taken by classmates.
Check for the university requirements: In Pakistani medical programmes they require Biology, Chemistry, and Physics combination at O Level. The choice must aim at your targeted institution.
Own your choices: The teachers and parents may help you in selecting, but as it’s the matter of your future so check your inner strength and own the decision.
Grading System
Cambridge O Level is providing a whole grade system from A* to G, with U for ungraded. In Pakistani universities you are required to get a minimum of grade C across five to eight subjects, with A* and A grades help you attain valuable scholarship. The CIAE exams run twice a year in May/June and October/November, whereas the May/June session is more popular in Pakistan.
O Levels vs. Matriculation
For students aiming to secure admission at leading local universities, pursue opportunities abroad, or build data interpretation, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making in medicine, finance, or technology, the O Level pathway offers a strong and critical thinking foundation that sets them apart. — demanding higher-order thinking and precise communication. Whereas Matriculation exam set up is more affordable, widely available across rural and semi-urban Pakistan, and entirely valid for most domestic university admissions.
There isn’t a single “right” choice. Families shall think carefully about what works best in terms of —balancing costs, the availability of good teachers, and, most importantly, their child’s individual learning style.

- You must spread revision over months, not just weeks.
